Hello, my name is teacher FITZ.
I think that teaching is something that can be really fun, and I have been involved in various aspects of the profession for over twenty years.
My parents are from Jamaica, but I was born in London and now live in Kirkby near Liverpool in the UK.
I obtained my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification from a company called SEE in Thailand in 2019, and a Post-graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Huddersfield, UK, in 2017. In 1985, I was awarded a PhD degree in Sociology from the University of Warwick in the UK, and in 1978 I completed a BA Honours Degree in Geography and African studies at the University of Birmingham, UK.
My first job after leaving school was as a voluntary schoolteacher at a High School in Jamaica, where I taught Maths and English. This experience has given me a love for teaching, which has become a life-long passion. After graduating from University, I worked as a research and policy officer in local government in London. I then got a job in adult education in London, where I worked as a consultant teaching management skills to senior managers in the UK National Health Service. I then worked for over 20 years in South Africa as a university lecturer and consultant. During this time, I undertook assignments in over 23 countries, providing policy advice on HIV/AIDS to governments across Africa. After completing my TEFL certificate, I worked in Thailand as a TEFL teacher. Subsequently, I returned to the UK, and worked as a Supply Teacher in secondary schools in London and Merseyside. Since 2021, I have been working full-time online as a Tutor for Preply and several other online companies. I am currently teaching over 40 students from 25 countries around the world. The wealth of experience I have gained in school teaching, university lecturing, adult education, and TEFL instruction means that I am exceptionally well qualified to be a Tutor.
As a UK-qualified teacher, I am registered on the government’s Disclosure and Barring Service, which guarantees that I am suitable for teaching children. Any student or parent can contact the service to verify my credentials.
I use the most advanced teaching strategies to ensure that each of my students achieves excellent learning outcomes. I have been trained to use the most modern and dynamic Evidence Based Teaching techniques developed by Geoff Petty. For English language teaching, I am a strong advocate of Total Physical Response, which is based on the coordination of language and physical movement. I like to give students instructions in English together with engaging body movements, and students respond in kind with appropriate repetition and fun whole-body actions. My expertise is in 11 Plus, GCSE Maths, English, Geography and Sociology, and A-Level Geography and Sociology, and Business English.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy hiking in the countryside. I am also a committed fan of Liverpool Football Club. So, if you follow English football, we can chat about what is going on in the English Premier League, and who is going to win the World Cup. I also have A-Level certificates in French and German, so if you are interested in learning either of these languages alongside my other subjects, I can help you with.
Thank you for reading my profile!
