Suvettha Philipthavarajah

Hi, I’m Suvettha, a patient tutor with 3 years’ experience tutoring students from ages 4-15 including those with learning disabilities such as autism. I teach Geography, English and RS up to A-Level.

Each of my lessons include a review of past content promoting knowledge retention and help build a proactive approach to learning. Content reviews help the student to see where they are less confident and create an open space for them to make mistakes, ask questions and consolidate their knowledge.

Every lesson will end with feedback to the student and if desired, the parent/guardian to promote transparency and allow you to keep track of your child's learning. Each lesson I will highlight a main target which I would like the student to focus on in the coming lessons. A more in-depth feedback session can also be arranged to talk through plans for teaching and targets if that is something you would like.

I have extensive knowledge of the Edexcel A-Level Geography curriculum and the AQA GCSE curriculum. When planning lessons, I make sure to include a variety of activities as often students attend tuition after school and energy levels can vary. Each lesson will make links to the synoptic themes within Geography: different players in a situation; attitudes and actions; futures and uncertainties. Lessons often include exam questions to ensure that writing and exam skills are being developed alongside learning content. Geography lessons also begin or end with a discussion on current affairs related to geography and how daily news can be used in essays to demonstrate a deeper understanding of questions. Lessons usually run for 1 hour but I offer up to 2 hours if this is preferred.

While tutoring at Team Up, I received a SSAT Gold Student Leadership Accreditation. I taught English on a 2-1 basis. While teaching I found that that although lessons were structured to feature a topic review (usually essay writing) at the end of the lesson, this did not cater to many of my students who came home from school and logged on immediately. For this reason, I often include games and change around the structure of the lesson to have the topic review at the beginning of the lesson so that students were more energised and able to provide good essays that were an accurate reflection of their ability. Often students do not want to write the essay at all and so I adapt the lesson by for example, planning and writing paragraphs as a group showing the students that writing can be enjoyable whilst also maximising productivity in the hour.

In GCSE English, I focus on building analysis skills and work through each question in the paper providing examples of excellence and improve work allowing them to recognise features of good writing and learn how to self-assess their own learning so that they are prepared to do this during exams. I also have experience teaching the KS2 English curriculum in my time with Team Up and Explore Learning. During my lessons with Team Up, with a synoptic focus on creative writing, I taught a range of topics including, active/passive voice, conjunctions, writing with a purpose, persuasive writing, using paragraphs and grammar such as parenthesis, apostrophes and questions/exclamations. When teaching KS2, I feel it is important to incorporate reading to build up confidence overtime as many students so not feel confident with public speaking and reading aloud is the first step in improving this. Grammar will be and spelling mistakes will be reviewed in following lessons to ensure that students learn from their mistakes rather than being immediately corrected and forgetting.

I am passionate about providing personalised lessons and improving my students mindsets to learning and therefore make sure find out what works for each child so that I am able to individually tailor the lessons to fit their learning style.
