I am a second year university student studying English Literature at the University of Leeds. As someone who sat their GCSEs and A levels fairy recently, and with a sibling who is currently taking her GCSEs, I have a good understanding of the current syllabus as well as what examiners are ultimately looking for in students' responses to the texts they are studying. I have always loved reading and analysing texts and enjoy the prospect of working with students in sessions where we can break down the intricacies of a text, investigating the author's intentions behind it. From my own experience of studying for my GCSEs and A levels, exams can be daunting and it can be difficult to present your knowledge in the form of an essay. I achieved grade 9 at English GCSE and an A* at A level and this involved a journey to really understand the expectations and what I needed to do to improve my grades. I want to share this knowledge with students by understanding their needs and sharing specific writing techniques they can adapt to improve. In doing so I hope to reduce exam anxiety and instead build on students' interests and appreciation for the Literature they are studying. During GCSEs and A levels, I had really helpful tutoring which has allowed me to observe and identify one-on-one teaching techniques that are beneficial and supportive. I really appreciated the importance of my tutors' curriculum knowledge and their clarity in explaining key subject areas to me. I have experience working with young people so know the importance of clear communication, leadership, organisation and planning. Presentations and research are also a part of my degree, which has allowed me to practice imparting my knowledge onto others in a way that's straightforward and easy to follow.
